Is anemia a very serious condition?
Anemia may be only minor and give little cause for concern, or it may be a warning sign of a more serious condition. For this reason, a person should not ignore the symptoms, but should seek advice from a physician.

What is Anisocytosis and Poikilocytosis?
In many conditions that lead to anemia, the shape and size of the red blood cells get altered. Variation in red cell size is called anisocytosis and variation in shape is called poikilocytosis.

Does vegetarianism lead to deficiency of Vitamin B12?
Although Vit B12 is more commonly present in meat and eggs. It is also present in dairy products and thus vegetarianism does not lead to Vit B12 deficiency.

How long does it take for the anemia to improve after starting Vit B12 therapy?
The laboratory investigations may take several days to show improvement. However, before that the patient shows subjective improvement.

Can hemolytic reactions be fatal?
Hemolytic reactions respond well to treatment provided the reaction is diagnosed early. Death rarely occurs from severe anemia. In most people, steroids or splenectomy control anemia. In others, partial control of the anemia is usually achieved.

Can hemolytic episodes be prevented?
The risk of acute hemolytic crisis can be decreased by reviewing the family history for any evidence of hemolytic anemia’s or spherocytosis or testing before giving any medications belonging to the above class of chemicals.
