The Unison Medicare & Research Centre, is the country's first Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care Clinic. It has organized a
Symposium on "HIV/AIDS: A Chronic Manageable Illness" to mark six years completion of its compassionate and rationale
care, on 18th March 2001. One of the renowned HIV/AIDS Clinicians- Dr.
Hans Jaeger; whose brainchild KIS - Curatorium for Immune deficiency, Munich, Germany, has been copied in making
of Unison Medicare, will be the main speaker.
With the advent of medical treatment including anti-retroviral therapy, combined with humane care and behavior modifications,
HIV patients have been living longer with a better quality of life, making HIV
disease - a chronic manageable illness. Of recently,
the antiretroviral medicines have been made available at cheaper cost, thanks to the price war between patent-owner
multinational companies and Indian copy-makers - particularly Cipla Ltd.
Issues related to - When to start Anti-retroviral therapy? Salvage possibilities, Structured Therapy Interruptions, Side Effects
and Toxicity and Anti-retroviral therapy in resource - poor settings will be discussed.

Municipal Commissioner, Mr. P. M. Bayas and Director General of Health Services,
Dr. S. R. Salunke have been invited to put in
their viewpoints. The 'D' Ward Medical Association and the Peoples Health Organization (India) have joined the efforts of
UMRC in this endeavor.
Though there is no registration fee for the Symposium, it is only for 150
doctors on first-cum-first-serve basis. The Symposium will be from 9.30 am to 2 pm on 18th March, 2001 and attendance
certificates towards Continued Medical Education (CME) credits will be issued to the attending doctors.
The Symposium will be followed by Lunch.
