| Echocardiography |
| Test utilizing sound waves to create a picture of the heart. Blood pumping power, valve function, and heart muscle function and heart anatomy can be assessed. May be combined with Cardiac Stress Testing (“stress – echo”). Usually performed by a cardiologist. |

| Ectopic Pregnancy |
| Abnormal pregnancy outside of the uterus –may lead to ectopic rupture and hemorrhage. |

| Electrocardiography (EKG) |
| Readout of the electrical impulses of the heart. Many heart problems can be detected using an EKG, including myocardial infarction.

| Electroencephalography (EEG) |
| Graphical readout of the electrical activity of the brain. May be used to detect seizures. |

| Electrolyte Imbalance |
| Disorder of the chemical balance of the body fluids. Maybe due to many factors, including kidney failure. |

| Electromyography (EMG) |
| Study examining the relationship of nerves and the muscles they control. Requires electrical stimulation of muscles and nerves through the skin. Can detect nerve and/or muscle malfunction due to many causes including herniated intervertebral disk and carpal tunnel syndrome. |

| Emphysema |
| Destruction of the lung tissue resulting in poor lung function. Often associated with smoking. Can be diagnosed with pulmonary function testing. |

| Endometriosis |
| Areas of tissue identical to the inner wall of the uterus in locations outside the uterus, such as the pelvis and abdomen. May cause pelvic pain, infertility. Detected with laparoscopy. |

| Environmental Allergies |
| Activation of the body’s immune system from an environmental source– pet dander, mold spores, chemicals and pollen are examples. |

| Epilepsy |
| The disease of having seizures. Most cases can be controlled by medication, cases which cannot be controlled, maybe candidates for seizure neurosurgery. |

| Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) |
| Introduction of a flexible camera into the throat, esophagus, stomach and first portion of the intestine. Used to look for acid reflux, tumors, inflammation, ulcers, and other abnormalities. |
