Dear Manish,
My son Jon, 22, became a c5/6 quadriplegic, paralyzed below his armpits, in his hands and in his triceps 3 years ago in Musoori, near Dehradun. He just finished a half-hour documentary, More than Walking, which is intended to encourage, and educate the general public, families, "patients" and medical people on how much disabled people can actually do, and turn their disability into their greatest strength - a force for good in their lives and for their communities. I see you want to do that as well. Can you get to the World Games for Wheelchair and Amputee sports in Bangalore the last week of November? India is fielding a wheelchair rugby team for the first time! We are also touring India to give Jon's movie to hospitals and patients after it's translated into HIndi, in December or January.Any help getting it onto Indian TV is welcome. We'd love to try to meet you! Where are you? We live in Connecticut near New York, and Jon's in college in New Hampshire, north of Boston.

Dear Manish,
Everyone needs community, as you point out, but for the disabled it is especially hard, though not impossible. My son Jon,22, became a c5/6 quad falling off a cliff in Musoorie, near Dehradun, 3 years ago, and is paralyzed below his armpits, in his triceps partially, and in his hands. But he too is a college student and plays wheelchair rugby, which he introduced to India in 2008 in order to help build community among the disabled. Now India is fielding its first team at the World Wheelchair Games in Bangalore in late November, 2009. Can you come? Jon will be in school, but I plan to be there.
However, Jon is planning to tour India in December or January to promote his new half-hour motivational documentary, More than Walking, to give to hospitals and patients. It was made to encourage and educate the general public, patients, their families and the medical community just how much quads can do, and to encourage the disabled to "use your disability as your greatest gift". It features the lives of 4 Indian quadriplegics plus Jon's story. We'd love to meet you and others like you if we can, and to introduce you to other wonderful disabled people we've met in India. We live in Connecticut, near New York, and Jon studies in New Hampshire, north of Boston.
Help us spread the message that your greatest nightmare can become your greatest gift.
Regards,
Vicky Sigworth
Dear Manish,
Govt is suppose to do so many things for people with disability yes BUT.......
Who stops you from going out. Pls remove the mental barrier. Pls try to go out.
You have to remain Positive How? Talk to people, tell them what you are doing, What you can do. Also listen to them what they think about you. Communicate with them. Change their perception about you. The enery should flow. It should not stop.Do not critisize. Every thing is part of life . It would improve. U will improve for yourself & for others.
Go to Narulas, Mc-Donald's, markets, where ever you want to go.Pls try. You will Over come physical & mental barriers. You should be determined to take 1 step " Yes I will go & eat at narula today " others will help u to do what u want to do. Do not bother about Ramps or lift. The awareness would come when people will see you trying to do things. You also identify joints where access is there.
I am a person with Spinal injury T10-T11. When ever I feel like I want to eat out I go for it. If there are steps. I seek help from my friends to help me negotiate steps.
I make sure I attend all parties for which I am invited. I go to market in delhi like sarojani Nager, Lajpat Nager, Connaught place, South Extension etc.
Although I am not very found of movies but I also visit theaters for movies.
Actully we have to creat our own space. It is only possibe if we get out of our house.
So my dear friend, what ever you want to do just try doing it.Do It and let me know how you felt.
good luck.
