Free check ups for diabetes on Nov 14
A two–day special awareness programme to mark the World Diabetes Day on November 14 has been organised by the Diabetes Care and Research foundation (DCRF) in association with the Lions Club International (District 323 D–2).

K.B. Grant, chairman and managing trustee of Ruby Hall clinic, will flag off the awareness programmes at Ruby Hall on November 13. Road shows, as well as a rally and exhibition on diabetes will be held.

“Around 10 important locations in the city have been designated for the road shows on November 13 and 14. People will be able to get free diabetes check-up, free guidance on diet, lifestyle and exercise as well as free diabetes information booklets from these designated locations,” said Abhay Mutha, president, DCRF. The locations are M G road, Wadia college, City Pride Satara road, F C college chowk, Kothrud bus stand, Hadapsar main chowk, Aundh, Shaniwarwada chowk, Kalyaningar, Sarasbaug etc., said Mutha.

On November 14, a rally will start from Shaniwarwada at 8.30 am. K B Grant, cricketer Chandu Borde, members of Lion Club and school children along with diabetic patients are expected to participate.

“The rally, which will start from Shaniwarwada, will conclude at Balgandharwa Rangmandir, where there will be a special programme on ‘How to prevent diabetes’,” said Chandrahas Shetty, chairman (Medical activity) Lions Club district.

On the same day, diabetes expert and president DCRF, Abhay Mutha will give a lecture on the subject along with a slide show from 10 am and 11 am at the same venue. Later, K B Grant will inaugurate an exhibition on diabetes at the Balgandharwa Rang Mandir. Free guidance to people on all aspects of diabetes as well as free check ups, free booklets, guidance on diet and exercise etc. will be provided, said Shetty.

DCRF is a social organisation and has been organising seminars, road shows, check up camps on diabetes in Maharashtra since 2004. The foundation has adopted 105 children who are Type 1 diabetic patients and takes care of their education, check ups, treatment, insulin, said Mutha. He added that out of the 150 million diabetics in the world, around 40 to 50 million are in India. “It is estimated that till 2020, India will have 70 to 80 million diabetes patients.”
