A team of pediatric surgeons from Kasturba hospital have conducted a rare surgery by removing a large tumour from the liver weighing over 2.5 kg. The patient is recovering fast.
A 14–year–old girl Kalpana, (name changed for confidentiality), haling from Goa was evaluated at a healthcare centre in Goa and was found to have a tumour in the right lobe of her liver. Since treatment was not available there she approached Kasturba Hospital. Liver tumour is uncommon among children, that too of of this size.
Kalpana underwent surgery at Kasturba hospital by a surgical team lead by Dr Vijay Kumar, head, dept of pediatric surgery, Dr Santosh Prabhu and Dr Sundeep Dr Zeeshan with support of the anesthesia team lead Dr Elsa Varghese and Dr Sathyajith. Dr Vijayakumar said it required a great amount of exposure to complicated cases to perform this kind of a liver tumour removal surgery. The entire right half of the liver was removed which took 10 hours to complete.
Vijayakumar said the patient will take about two months to recover fully from the surgery and can lead a normal life, because liver has the property to regenerate itself. Surgical removal of liver tumours will give a long lease of life to many patients, he observed.
