The Maharashtra Government is mulling to follow the ‘Mexican model’ to combat the sudden spread of swine flu in the state.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan specifically said that the state would adopt the Mexican model which places restrictions on the movement of citizens in public places wherever necessary, Chief Secretary Johny Joseph said.
He said that Monday’s decision to shut educational institutions in Pune was part of the Mexican model.
“It has been established that the patients infected with swine flue are not necessarily be those who have travelled abroad and the disease has been passing on to others locally,” Joseph said.
None of the three swine flu victims in the state, two in Pune and one in Mumbai, have travelled abroad.
Joseph said that on Monday he had several rounds of meetings with health officials and representatives of private hospitals to discuss setting up of swine flu treatment facilities in the hospitals. “A top–level committee was set up to take decisions on this matter. The Home Ministry is also seriously considering making masks mandatory in public places if need be,” Joseph added.
