The Nellore district administration on Monday registered a case of negligence against the Bollineni Global Eye Foundation Hospital after doctors of the foundation botched the cataract operations last week which came to light on Saturday.
While eyeballs of four patients were removed on Oct 23, that of a fifth patient were taken out on Monday. Six of the total 34 patients who underwent cataract operation are in a critical condition at Sankar Netralaya in Chennai.
Nellore SP B Malla Reddy told TOI that a case of negligence was registered against the hospital management and the doctors who performed the operation.
“At this stage, we have booked a case of negligence under Section 338 of the Indian Penal Code (causing grievous hurt by an act which endangers human life) against the foundation and the doctors. Investigation to pinpoint the accused will begin shortly,” the SP said.
But being booked for negligence, the accused can get away lightly as the punishment is a mere two years’ imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1,000 or both.
“After investigations, if the situation warrants, we can slap more serious cases against the offenders,” the SP added.
The case of negligence was registered after the state government on Monday morning directed Nellore collector K Ramgopal to suo motu take action against the foundation and its doctors.
