The health department of the Pimpri–Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will set up an eye bank in the coming financial year, subject to a sanction from the standing committee.
The eye bank will serve patients from Pimpri–Chinchwad, Dehu Road, Talegaon and Lonavla areas. The bank will be housed in the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital and will approximately cost Rs 8 to 10 crore. The health department is hoping to receive funds after April, 2009.
A few months back, an eminent medical practitioner and a trustee of Kalapini cultural organisation in Talegaon, Anant Paranjape had pointed out the need for setting up an eye bank in Talegaon.
Incidentally, the PCMC’s original plan was to create a burns treatment ward, but it was put on hold because it needed Rs 40 crore to Rs 50 crore to start with.
The need for a burns ward was felt due to high density of industries in the Pimpri–Chinchwad–Talegaon areas. Workers need proper and urgent treatment for burn injuries. The need was felt more in August last year after a major industrial fire in which ten women lost their lives.
