City-based surgeon conducted research and found that patients can be treated with Gastric Bypass Bariatric surgery
Dr. Shahshank Shah Dr. Shahshank Shah
Dr Shashank Shah, a citybased bariatric surgeon has developed an innovation in surgery for diabetes that brings a new lease of life for the millions suffering from Type-2 diabetes. According to the research, type-2 diabetes can be cured through the use of Bariatric surgery.

In a research study conducted on Type-2 Diabetes patients over the past 3 years patients suffering from Type-2 diabetes for many years have shown drastic improvement with diabetes completely disappearing in such patients. These patients were treated with Gastric Bypass Bariatric surgery in order to tackle Type-2 diabetes. And the results have been phenomenally satisfactory.

He will be the only Asian to present a research paper at California Chapter of American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery on February 27 on ‘Indian experience with treatment of Type-2 Diabetes in Patients with BMI Below 35Kg M2 with Gastric Bypass’.

In India prevalence of Diabetes Type-2 is very high and is on the rise in urbans. Epidemiological studies show that there are 43 million adults with diabetes and are estimated to increase to 57.2 million by 2025. Incidentally, 80 per cent of diabetic in India are obese.

It has been established that the fat content in Indians is higher as compared to people from the West. Hence obese Indian diabetic fall in the category of morbidly obese even though their BMI is not very high. These obese diabetic Indians can benefit from this application of Metabolic and Bariatric surgery for diabetes especially when the medical treatment fails to control their diabetes.

“We have treated 15 diabetes patients with a BMI between 20 to 34 and we found that all have their sugar to normal without any treatment in 9 months. Dr Uday Phadake has taken a lead in this in our unit. We offered a weight loss surgery to these patients and what was interesting was that they remained normal without significant weight loss but lost their diabetes and metabolic syndrome. This was contrary to conventional belief that bariatrics can not work in those not morbidly obese,” said Dr Shashank Shah.

He also added that they have sent the data to the official journal of American Society. It was well appreciated and we received a special invitation from the President of American Society to give a speech on our experience, which is unique and called pioneer world-wide.

A type 2 Diabetic Experiences:
Increased thirst Increased urination Increased appetite Fatigue Blurred vision Frequent or slow-healing infections Erectile dysfunction
