NC Manjunath, director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, tells DNA Sunday that high stress levels among young professionals is leading to heart problems. Excerpts from the interview:
How equipped are we to treat cardiac diseases?
In terms of expertise and technology, India is one of the best. We have been able to improve ourselves over the years. The fact that we have many foreigners coming in for treatment is evidence of this improvement.
What are the challenges?
The main problems is that high–end technology and treatment is available only for a select few. The common man still has no access to state–of–the–art medicine because of the high costs involved. The government is working on a solution by providing subsidies. Hence, subsidised or even free treatment is provided for those who cannot afford treatment. We’re able to provide subsidised treatment without compromising on the quality.
How is corporate work–style resulting in cardiac problems?
High stress levels among young professionals is a reason for heart problems in youngsters. When we went through our records, 25 per cent of patients who had cardiac problems were of the age group 19–35. Erratic lifestyle, food habits and the lack of exercise results in cardiac problems among the youth.
