The Armed Forces Medical College’s (AFMC) Department of Dermatology was inaugurated on Friday by Lt General D P Vats, Director and Commandant, AFMC. According to the college, the department holds the country’s first ‘Dermatology Intensive Care Unit’.
Maj General Manoj Luthra, Dean and Deputy Commandant cut the ceremonial ribbon before an inspection of the facilities available. Previously, the Dermatology Department was functioning from the Command hospital (Southern Command). According to Col Rajan S Grewal, Professor, Senior Adviser and HoD, (Derm) a new department was considered a necessity in organisational interests and in consonance with Medical Council of India regulations.
"Skin Civil OPD, special clinics for Vitiligo and Psoriasis; as well as academic programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students shall be conducted in this new department," he said.
Built at a cost of approximately Rs 50 lakhs, this department has all the required modern equipment and facilities, including narrowband ultraviolet ‘B’ and ‘A’ phototherapy, carbon dioxide laser surgery, dermabrasion and microdermabrasion, vitiligo surgery, hair transplantation, electrosurgery, radiosurgery, cryotherapy, chemical peels, nail and mole surgery, scar revision, iontophoresis in addition to contact allergy patch testing and cosmetology consultation.
