A PREGNANT woman with a complicated heart condition and her child were saved by a rare surgery at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and Hero DMC Heart Institute.
Chief Cardiologist and Co–ordinator, Hero DMC Heart Institute, Dr G S Wander, talking to mediapersons on Wednesday said 29 weeks pregnant Harmandeep was admitted on December, 24, 2009, after she complained of breathlessness.
“She was diagnosed with mitral valve which meant she had to undergo an open heart urgery. But the task was diffiult since she was pregnant. In such cases the risk is not in savng the mother but the fetus.
And this particular case was ritical because of the deteri rating condition of the other,” he said.
Harmandeep’s valve had to be replaced while blood flow o the fetus had to be mainained, Dr Wander explained.
A team of doctors led by Dr arju Ralhan, senior cardiac urgeon; Dr Vivek, cardiac naesthetic and Dr Suman uri, associate professor, bst. & Gynae conducted the urgery. The doctors tried var us methods such as deliverng the baby before the urgery, but in such a condi on, risk to the mother would ave increased tremendously and there is always a question egarding the survival of the etus with a decompensated eart” Dr Wander said.
