Paediatrician Sharad Agarkhedkar took over as the president of the city chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for 2010–11 here on Sunday.
Agarkhedkar has been closely associated with the World Health Organisation’s research on bivalent oral polio vaccine recently introduced by the Government of India in the Pulse Polio Campaign. The outgoing president, Dilip Sarda, handed over the president medallion to him in a programme held at the IMA House on Tilak road on Sunday.
Elaborating on major initiatives he will implement during his tenure, Agarkhedkar said, “Imparting basic as well as advanced life support training to doctors under the IMA’s newly launched disaster management cell will be among the top priorities. Sensitisation and training to segregate garbage at source and other home–based solutions for environment safety, introduction of continued medical education credit system for doctors to get their registration with the Medical Council of India are high on my to–do list.”
Meanwhile, during the same programme, Cardiologist S M S Mody, who started the N M Wadia Institute of Cardiology in 1967, was felicitated by Sarda. Paediatrician D B Shirole, who has been involved with the care of tribal children in Gadchiroli and other places along the Satpura ranges, was also felicitated. He was presented a scroll of honour and citation at the hands of Sarda. Biomedical engineer Yogesh Gurjar was also feted.
Orthopaedic surgeon K H Sancheti presided over the function and delivered a lecture on stress management. “Time management plays a key role in reducing stress. Doctors should opt for time management skills as they help in coping with professional workload and reduce stress.”
General surgeon Ambrish Shahade and gynaecologist Bharati Dhore Patil have been elected as vice–presidents, while anaesthetist Arun Halbe and ophthalmologist Ganesh Datar have been elected secretaries. Surgeon Maya Tulpule has been elected as the treasurer.
