The Union government’s Transplantation of Human Organs Act will be implemented in Maharashtra without making any changes to it. Once the existing Organ Donation Act is amended and implemented, even grandparents, uncles and aunt will be able to donate their organs to those in need in their family. Also, close relatives can donate an organ provided no commercial dealing is involved.
Earlier only the patient’s spouse, son, daughter, father or sibling were allowed to donate an organ.
The Centre, while bringing any new law or amending the existing Act, requires the consent of all states. The state cabinet on Wednesday gave its consent to bring a proposal in the upcoming state legislature session, which will allow the Union government to go ahead with the introduction of the Act with the amendment.
Nearly two lakh people are diagnosed with serious ailments and in many cases, organ donation is the only solution. "The change in rules will help many patients. It is a good move by the Union government. None of the states should object to the changes,’’ said a senior Mantralaya official.
