In a rare surgery, the backbone of an accident patient was fixed using a screwshaped medical implant. According to the doctors, due to the innovative technique the 40–year–old has been saved from wearing a neck collar for lifetime.
The "Anterior Odontoid Screw Placement" surgery is critical as it requires an incision from the front of the neck.
Doctors, however, found it the most suitable solution when the patient was admitted on July 2, in an unconscious state after a road accident.
He had suffered severe damage in upper–most part of the vertebra. Owing to the damage to the spinal cord the patient was referred to neurosurgery department.
"The patient had weakness on left side and respiratory problems as the broken piece was pressing the spinal cord. Conventionally, such parts are fixed by operating the rear side of the neck," said Dr Hemant Bhartariya, head of neurosurgery at Fortis Hospital.
