The Trans Catheter Therapeutics (TCT) 2010 conference has awarded city–based physician Dr Rahul R Patil with the ’The Best Challenging Case Award’ from India for successfully operating an accident patient with multiple injuries. The conference was held in Washington DC this September.

Dr Patil, who is with the Noble Hospital, operated upon a 46–year old patient who met with a severe road accident while riding his motorcycle in February this year.

"The patient was immediately brought to the emergency department of the hospital with multiple breeding abrasion, head and right arm injury, right eye bleeding and blunt chest trauma," said Dr Patil.

He was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for further treatment. But the complications worsened as the ECG revealed massive heart attack.

In view of the multiple fatal bleeding injuries blood thinning medicines couldn’t be administered as primary treatment for heart attack. Hence, an angioplasty was carried out successfully, explained Dr Patil.

Dr Patil said the primary angioplasty was done with the help of thrombus suction device, thrombus retrieval and chally stentup was performed. The results were good as the patient started responding to the treatment. Subsequently, the patient was discharged with good heart function and has completed seven months of routine check–up.

Dr Patil said that the patient’s case was selected as a challenging case for the presentation at the Trans Catheter Therapeutics (TCT) 2010 conference attended by expert physicians from across the globe. After reviewing the case, the conference discovered that only 24 such cases were reported in journals in the last century.
