A sudden rise in cases of dengue in Mira Road and Bhayander has become a cause of concern in the region. Doctors fear that the onset of monsoon will only make the condition worse.
Hospitals and general practitioners have been attending to at least five cases of dengue every day for the past few days. Shanti Nagar, Naya Nagar and Shrusti Complex in Mira Road have reported cases of dengue. We are treating some families for dengue and most of them are testing positive, said a doctor affiliated with a Mira Road hospital.
In July last year, a 23–yearold resident of Bhola Nagar in Bhayander had died of dengue. Since January last year, three dengue deaths were reported in Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) limits.
A doctor said that a number of patients are complaining of high fever and muscle pain, both symptoms of dengue. In monsoon, as mosquito increases, the number of dengue cases could go up.
Doctors complained that despite a rise in the cases, there seemed to be no urgency on part of civic officials to address the issue. The MBMC health department has been holding meetings to tackle monsoonrelated diseases, but no clear plans have been chalked out. Cleaning of nullahs ahead of monsoon has also not been undertaken on a war footing yet.
Residents of Mira Road and Bhayander have been complaining of the mosquito menace round the year. Two years back, MBMC corporator Chandrakant Mody had consumed a bottle of pesticide meant for the mosquitoes to prove that it had no effect when sprayed on mosquitoes breeding in drains and nullahs.
Civic officials said that fogging operations have begun after doctors pointed out about increasing cases of dengue.
