70,000 people get free check–up, 2,000 free dentures
The 19th dental fortnight concluded at Samrala on Thursday. Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla presided over the state–level function.
She stressed on the need for better oral care.
On the occasion, poor patients were given free dentures. Patient education booklets on impacted molars and oral cancer were also released. An impressive exhibition on oral and dental disease prevention and treatment was put up at in the Civil Hospital premises.
Free dental treatment was given to patients at Civil Hospital Raikot, Samrala, Khanna, Ludhiana, Jagraon and Maloud. As many as 70,000 patients got free check–up, 2,000 were given free dentures and nearly 15 ultra–modern dental chairs were provided to different government hospitals. Dr Pardeep Sharma, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and nodal officer for the Dental fortnight, said breastfeeding promotion also curbed tooth decay.
“Infants experience teething problems and invariably, young mothers give the child a plastic ring to bite on. But why not vegetables and fruits? Toxicity of plastic is well known. Also, a child should to be weaned away from thumbsucking before three years of age, otherwise he or she is likely to develop protruded and crooked teeth.”
