Rare surgery: German doc pulls and ‘staples’ intestine
In a rare surgery performed for the first time in the state, doctors pulled out the intestine of a patient and "stapled" it back after removing a defective portion at a city hospital on Sunday.
The surgery was performed by visiting faculty from Germany–Dr Ronald Sherer to demonstrate a new technique called perennial stapled prolapsed dissection.
The incision–less surgery that lasted for less than half an hour, was telecast live at the Birla auditorium for a 200–strong delegation, as part of the 33rd national conference of Association of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
The 35–year–old patient was suffering from rectal polyps, an intestinal disorder since birth, that had aggravated over the past few years. This new procedure provides quick relief and better results. The patient’s condition is reported stable. However, people will have to wait for some time before this new technique is being offered at the hospitals across the state. During the five–day conference, delegates saw a live telecast of a robotic surgery from Pune, and surgical treatment of chronic constipation at a city hospital.
The latter was performed by Delhi–based Dr Bharat Bhushan Agarwal, where a part of the patient’s intestine that obstructs the working of the digestive system was removed. New screening techniques helped in the identification of the problem area and its surgical treatment.
