Dr Tim Nedas (left) from London and Dr Janak Desai (right) performing kidney stone removal surgery at a city hospital Dr Tim Nedas, a junior urologist from London has come to the city to train at the Samved Hospital in the Per–Cutaneous Nephro Lithotripsy (PCNL) technique, an advanced procedure to remove kidney stones through keyhole surgery.
Dr Nedas is accompanied with Dr Nihal Jaisurya, a Sri Lankan doctor from Essex to hone their skills at the procedure to remove stones from the kidneys with minimum invasion.
Director of urology at Samved Hospital, Dr Janak Desai, said that this is the sixth batch of doctors from England who have come to Ahmedabad to train in PCNL procedure.
“In this procedure, a small incision is made through which a scope is passed inside. The stones inside the kidney now visible due to the scope are broken using laser beams or ultra–sound beams and removed through the same hole. This has become the gold standard for stone removal with open surgeries practically becoming obsolete,” said Dr Desai who is also a faculty with the Institute of Urology, London.
Dr Desai said that stone disease is fairly common in the West while it is largely prevalent in India. “Since there are more cases of kidney stones, we are skilled in treating stones, even large ones, in the kidney through PCNL. This is why these foreign students come to us to learn,” said Dr Desai, who said that West has more of prostrate cancer cases and local doctors go there to learn about treating them better.
Dr Nedas said that they get to see one case per month of kidney stones in their hospital while here he will be witnessing surgery on a minimum ten patients. “It is a great learning experience. The facilities and the surgical skills of doctors here are excellent,” said Dr Nedas.
