Deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal and others during the function on SundayDeputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal and others during the function on Sunday
There is a need for an independent government forum to address issues related to private hospitals in the state, deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal said here on Sunday.

Bhujbal was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the silver jubilee function of Poona Hospital and Research Centre (PHRC) at the Yashawantrao Chavan Auditorium on Sunday.

“The state government is committed to extend affordable and quality medical services to the poor and needy. A total of 700 crore has been spent on medical care by the government till February this year. There has been a gradual reduction in maternal and infant mortality in the state over the years,” said Bhujbal, while appreciating the work of PHRC in rendering affordable medical services to the economically weaker section of society.

PHRC, a 250–bed multispecialty tertiary care centre, was established in 1985 under the aegis of the Rajasthani and Gujarati charitable foundation.

“We will look into allotting increased FSI to PHRC so that the hospital can expand its medical services and more people can avail of them,” said Bhujbal.

District guardian minister Ajit Pawar said that the state government is mulling over a proposal to put healthcare facilities within the reach of everyone. “Medical care for all is our motto and the health department is committed to this objective,” said Pawar.

Planning Commission member Narendra Jadhav said that only one per cent of the gross domestic product is spent on medical services in the country. Many backward countries spend much more on medical services than us.

“There is a need to fill up all vacant posts of medical officers and other health department vacancies. Private and government sector should work in tandem to improve health facilities,” he added.

“Only a marginal amount will be charged from the needy for all heart related surgeries in the silver jubilee year of the hospital,” said Rasiklal Dhariwal, one of the trustees of the hospital. Doctors, employees and patrons of the PHRC were felicitated during the function.
