The Madras High Court has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government on a public interest writ petition seeking the filling up of about 9,000 backlog vacancies meant for disabled persons in government departments.
The first bench comprising Chief Justice HL Gokhale and Justice V Dhanapalan ordered notices on the PIL of TMN Deepak, who, referring to an August 27, 2008 government order, contended that the order envisaged 3% reservation for the disabled in government departments. Noting that the government had stated that it had created 3.44 lakh job opportunities in the government sector, the petitioner said 3% of the jobs would translate into about 9,000 vacancies for the disabled.
Though the government has constituted a committee to monitor the implementation for the disabled, the arrangement existed only on paper, he said.
