In what may be for the first time, a 55–year–old alcoholic got a second chance at life from the liver of a 76–year old diabetic person who was terminally ill. Medically, his condition was described as ‘non–heart beating deceased’ (NBHD) donor.
Dilip Patel, a resident of Thaltej who was dying of cirrhosis caused by alcoholism, was on the wait–list for a liver donor for the last few months. The transplant was performed at a medical institute at Civil Hospital here.
The transplant was performed with the consent of the family of the donor Kanta Shah, who was on a ventilator. Shah was a diabetic for the last 20 years whose kidneys were damaged and had suffered irreversible brain haemorrhage.
The eight–hour–long transplant operation was done on May 5 by Dr Pranjal Modi and his team.
