He was speaking at the felicitation programme of Karnataka’s science PUC topper, Rashmi Patil. "The governments of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have shown keen interest in setting up medical colleges where local students can study and work. These states have very poor health indicators," he said.
"Few of the states don’t have any medical colleges at all. There is a huge North–South divide that needs to be bridged. Development will take place automatically once colleges are set up in every state," he added. He added that there is a severe crunch of medical specialists all over the country.
Rashmi, currently pursuing her MBBS from KMC, said: "Concentrate well in class and work hard after college hours to score good grades." She plans to pursue cardiology.
Dr Shetty urged her to take up paediatric cardiology. "One in every 140 children has heart disease. In India, the incidence is highest so it needs to be addressed urgently," he said.
