Still, over 14 million asthmatics in India lead a compromised lifestyle. The number is over 68% of the total 20 million asthma patients in India. "Patients suffering with asthma frequently miss school or work, find it difficult to enjoy a good night’s sleep, refrain indulging in vigorous physical activities and may even avoid social interaction because of the stigma associated,’’ said Dr BP Singh, a city based pulmonary expert.
Head of pulmonary medicine department, CSMMU, Prof Rajendra Prasad said asthma can be compared with weak eyes. Like a person can see after wearing spectacles, he can do all he wants after taking proper medicines.
"A number of syrups, tablets, injections and inhalers are available today which prevent the attack and give relief during attacks. Inhaler therapy has proved its mettle across the globe," he added. "The impact can be seen in the form of fewer coughing attacks and reduced breathlessness, no need to miss work and other activities, full participation in physical activity and many more," he said.
