Students of at least 50 schools in the city – private, aided and public – will be screened by a group of doctors for various lifestyle–related disorders, including obesity, hypertension and diabetes. The study will begin in the coming academic year, senior endocrinologist Dr Usha Sriram said on Friday.
“The screening will include clinical investigations of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and lipid profile. We will also check if they have the right height and weight. There will be detailed interviews with students, where we will record their eating habits, active hours (playing) and a bit of their family medical history,” she said.
The study will be followed up with comprehensive recommendations for students. “If they are found to have any disorder, medicines will be prescribed. For others, we will give advice on diet and exercise,” she said.
