Facility Will Respond To Medical Emergencies
The city branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has set up a permanent disaster management cell so that a rapid response medical team is ready in case of an emergency.
The cell was inaugurated by joint commissioner of police Rajendra Sonwane at Red Cross Hall, Rasta Peth, on Sunday. The city branch of Red Cross Society has declared complete support to the cell.
“A disaster management committee comprising members of IMA, Red Cross Society and NGOs has been formed. A medical team of 30 experts mainly comprising family physicians, orthopaedic surgeon, neurosurgeon, physician, gynaecologist, paediatrician, anaesthetist etc. has also been formed to respond to all kinds of disasters–natural and man-made,” said paediatrician Dilip Sarda, the president of the city chapter of IMA.
“The situation at the German Bakery after the blast was chaotic. There was no clue as to who was escorting the injured and to which hospital they were heading for,” said joint commissioner of police Rajendra sonawane.
The IMA has requested the joint commissioner to issue them an ID card so that they can rush to the site of emergency and they will not be stopped from doing their job.
“The joint commissioner said he would call a meeting next weekand a decision regarding issuing ID cards to the members of the cell will be taken thereafter,” said Sarda.
A rapid response medical team will be given training by experts in all aspects of disaster management. “This training will be given every six months so as to keep them abreast of the latest techniques and methods,” said Sarda.
The team can also rush to a site of accident–be it on roads, railways, mines or factories, added Sarda.
About the challenges ahead, Sarda said, “Capability-building in disaster management requires strategic planning, political support, and a significant infusion of technology.”
