The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in a bid to put an end to the reluctance shown by some private hospitals to accept injured road mishap victims, will pay up to Rs 10,000 for the first 24 hours of treatment. There is one clause though: the injured person has to be shifted to a government or civic hospital once his or her condition is stable. The scheme kicks off on August 15.
The scheme,which the PMC has worked out along with the Indian Medical Association, had initially been planned only for people living below the poverty line. "We have now decided to extend its scope. But the injured, after initial treatment, must be shifted to a government or civic hospital to avail of the scheme," said Nilesh Nikam, leader of the house in the PMC.
Nikam, who had proposed the scheme during his tenure as PMC standing committee chairman, said that while the amount may seem small, it would ensure that hospitals do not refuse treatment to accident victims during the crucial initial hours after the mishap.
The scheme is applicable to any person admitted to hospital after suffering injuries in a road mishap in the PMC limits. The injured who are admitted and discharged within 24 hours will also benefit from the scheme. The PMC will pay the money directly to the hospitals.The PMC has already set aside Rs 25 lakh for the scheme in the 2010-2011 civic budget, Nikam said.
