The Pulse Polio drive, held by the BMC on Sunday, yet again saw a poor turn–out. Only 62% of the city’s children under five years of age received the oral vaccine.
The target this time was 12,20,000 children, but only 7,45,000 were brought by their parents to be vaccinated against polio. Even though this coverage of this drive was two% more than the last, it is still not enough, the BMC feels. The corporation will now have to go from house to house in the next week to vaccinate the remaining children.
"We are going to start house to–house coverage from Monday and will try to immunize all the remaining children below the age of five till October 1. After that, we will start our ‘night round’, in which we send our health workers out in the night to look out for homeless children under five and vaccinate them," said Dr Mangala Gomare, the BMC incharge for the Pulse Polio drive.
