Pregnant women in the state capital will be soon issued identity cards for ensuring proper pre and post natal care. The card will also serve as the immunisation card for newly borns. Directives to this effect were issued by commissioner, Lucknow division, Prashant Trivedi at a meeting to review the progress of health services on Thursday.
“The health workers including Asha, ANMs and Anganwadi workers will identify the pregnant women and issue identity cards. The card will also be utilised as immunisation card for newly borns,”said Trivedi. Through i–cards, the administration aims to keep a track of the mother–to–be from the health point of view. The onus of implementation would lie on health workers. The same card would be used to keep a track of immunisation of the child.
“Besides ensuring good health to mothers, the step would promote institutional deliveries which would reflect on infant, maternal and child mortality rates of the state,” stated Dr AK Shukla, chief medical officer, Lucknow. To note, while the national average of IMR is 53 per 1,000 live births, 67 new borns die in UP. The MMR for India and UP is 254 and 400, respectively, indicating the dismal state of affairs.
