Although the country is facing an epidemic of sorts of osteoporosis–a disease in which the density of the bone decreases, thereby increasing the risk of fractures–there is shockingly low awareness about the condition, said doctors on the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day on Tuesday.
At a function organized by the Arthritis Foundation of India (AFI) in the city, doctors said that a million Indians would be affected every year. AFI statistics show that by 2013, India is expected to have over 36 million osteoporosis cases .
"Osteoporosis is rampant because of low awareness about the disease,” said AFI chairman Dr Sushil Sharma, a Delhi"based orthopedic surgeon.
