City–based Ruby Hall clinic on Saturday announced that it has set up a liver transplant centre in association with Hyderabadbased Global hospitals. Addressing a press conference, Sheetal Mahajani, consultant gastroenterologist at Ruby Hall, said this would be the first such programme in the city.
"Ruby Hall clinic plans to conduct both cadaveric and living related liver transplantation at the centre," said Mahajani. "We expect to undertake a couple of surgeries within the next month. Our aim is not to waste a single organ and to make the organs available to the needy, she added.
She said that many people died while on the liver transplant waiting list and the programme would help increase public awareness as regards organ donation and organ–sharing.
In the last decade new developments have taken place and now many centres in the country are geared up to conduct successful liver transplantation. Ruby Hall clinic itself has a world class infrastructure, the legal permission to carry out liver transplantation and now a team of doctors to conduct the surgeries, she said.
Liver transplantation is potentially applicable in acute or chronic conditions resulting in irreversible liver dysfunction, provided the recipient dopes not have other conditions that preclude a successful transplant, she added.
