If you think the water purifier in your house is providing clean drinking water, then think again. A study released here Wednesday found that all chemical water purifiers in the Indian market fall short of required safety standards.
The study by Healthy You Foundation covered all major brands of water purifiers available in the Indian market and found that they do not disclose adequate information to enable consumers to make an informed choice.
While chemical water purifiers were found to be the worst, the ultraviolet based and reverse osmosis systems performed better.
"Health ministry should ensure there is a comprehensive mandatory labelling based on international practices or equivalent Indian standards," said Bejon Misra, founder of Healthy You Foundation.
Misra also said there is a lack of stringent standards and regulations in India to monitor public health and safety issues as a variety of water purifiers make tall claims to purify water.
