An estimated 33.3 million people in India, have electrical problems in their heart which can cause sudden cardiac deaths. However, electrical malfunctioning in the heart can happen to anyone from a newborn to an elderly person,” said Dr Rajkumar Mantravadi, consultant cardiac electropsychologist at Sahyadri Hospital. The hospital launched its Electrical Heart Diseases Centre (EHC), a first in Maharashtra, on Wednesday.
“Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) is a silent killer and the symptoms can be very misleading, as well. The heart generates its own electricity with every contraction. Sometimes, this electric generation can malfunction, which can cause the heart to stop. At this point, the niche area of electropsychology comes into play,” said Mantravadi. He added that angioplasty, as well as by-pass surgeries deal with heart blockages, which is different from the electrical circuit of the heart being affected.
The EHC offers diagnostic and treatment services for cardiac rhythm disorders, and patients who suffer from symptoms such as uneasiness in the chest, tiredness, irregular pulse, missed beats, fainting, dizziness, breathlessness and are not improving with medicines, could benefit from visit to a cardiac electropsychologist.
Mantravadi said that the awareness on this area is slowly being realised in India. “We are planning on conducting 'Know your pulse' campaigns, medical seminars for doctors and cardiologists to increase awareness in this area, as well as on many advance treatments and pace makers that are available today.”
