On Thursday the Union cabinet decided to extend the benefit of the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) to all registered domestic workers in the country The move will provide free health coverage up to Rs30.000 per year to about 47.50 Iakh domestic workers under the insurance scheme..
RSBY is a smart card based cashless health insurance cover up to Rs30.000 In any empanelled hospital in the country. It covers BPI. workers (a unit of five) ‘ in unorganised sector.
lt is at present being implemented in 25 states and Union territories. Under the scheme, funds will be allocated to the state from the National Social Security hind for unorganised workers.
be shared by the central and state governments in the ratio of 75:25 while in case of North East States and Jamrnu and Kashmir the ratio will be90:10.
Domestic work forms one of the largest sectors of female employment in the urban areas. Domestic workers are unorganised and the sector remains unregulated and unprotected by labour laws.
These workers come from vulnerable com munities and backward areas. Most of these are poor. vulnerable. illiterate, unskilled and do not understand the urban labour market. The decision for RSBY cov erage to domestic workers was based on the suggestions of a government appointed Task Force which also wanted more bene?ts like the National Pension Scheme. health and maternity bene?ts. death and disability bene?ts. oid age bene?ts to be extended to them
