Woman Resorted To Surrogacy As She Had No Uterus, Tubes, Ovaries Or Even External Genitalia
Ritu and Swanpil Sahu were childless even after two years of marriage. Examination using a laparoscope showed that she had no uterus, tubes or ovaries. Neither did the doctors find any external genitalia. In fact, genetically, Ritu was a male. Yet, the couple became the proud parents of twins through the test tube technique on Wednesday.

Dr Purnima Nadkarni, test tube baby expert at the 21st Century Hospital here, said that Ritu suffered from primary infertility. “I ordered genetic analysis (karyotype) of the female. It was found that genetically the patient is a male,’’ she said. Ritu was advised to go for IVF with egg donation from a donor and surrogacy. A young healthy egg donor and a surrogate mother were also identified. “After completing all the legal procedure, the IVF was done using the husband’s sperms and the donor’s eggs. Four embryos were made and transferred into the uterus of surrogate mother who conceived twins,” said Dr Nadkarni.

“The babies were born after Caesarean section at 12.15 pm and are healthy,” said Dr N Parmar of the hospital. One of them is a boy of 2.5 kg and the other a girl of 2.2 kg.

“Today is the biggest day in our lives. There was lot of pressure on our family regarding the fact that Riti could never conceive,’’ said Swapnil who works as an engineer in Raipur, Chhatisgarh. Riti was very excited about the whole thing as now she could really experience the joy of motherhood. “I was always very depressed and sad that my medical condition could never allow me to be pregnant. But the arrival of these twins will change my life forever and for the better,’’ she said.

The surrogate, Vincenta from Anand, said, “I am happy that I have become a part of family’s happiness.” She said the money would help her educate her two children.
