Rains to Usher in Diseases: Mumbai Doctors

While the pre–monsoon showers brought from the sweltering heat for Mumbaikars, city doctors have warned that this will lead to rise in the number of cases of upper respiratory infections, viral fever and malaria in the city.
Dr Monical Goel, consulting physician, PD Hinduja hospital said, "Apart from viral fever, the most typical cases are of upper respiratory infections with people complaining of cough, cold, throat infections, tonsillitis, nosebleeds and so on. The sudden dip in temperature will see rise in these ailments."
Apart from the erratic temperatures, unhygienic eating habits like eating out often, not washing vegetables and fruits before eating anddrinking unsafe water adds to the ailments. According to the doctors, people should take care of what they eat. "This is time of the year when we see lot of gastroenteritis cases. People should avoid roadside food and water," said Dr Pratit Samdhani, consulting physician, Jaslok hospital.
"Pre–monsoon showers result in an increase in the humidity level and pollutants in the atmosphere are brought down. It is advisable not to ignore fever or cough conditions that prevail beyond 48 hours," said Dr Samdhani. According to the city doctors people need to drink lot of water to keep themselves hydrated or there can be cases of dehydration too.
