As many as 30 sonography centres in Thane, Navi Mumbai and the rural pockets in the district were temporarily shut down in the past 13 days after the state authorities launched a special drive to prevent the wide–spread crime of sex–determination and female foeticide.
Although the nature of the offences committed by these privately–managed centres remains closed in sarkari files, Thane civil surgeon Dr R B Kulkarni will be scrutinizing each case at a meeting of the district advisory board scheduled on Tuesday.
“Of the 30 sonography centres whose licences have been temporarily suspended, 13 are in Thane, 12 in the Navi Mumbai pocket and the remainder in the peripheral pockets of the district. We have issued showcause notices to them and sought an explanation about the lapses found by the team which inspected the centres.
The advisory board will review their cases and decide the quantum of punishment accordingly, Kulkarni told TOI. While Kulkarni claimed that there has been little evidence of such illegal activities being carried out by sonography centres here, the seizure of portable machines and showcause notices to 30 such centres suggest a different story.
However, Dr Jignesh Thakker, general secretary of Indian Radiology Skull and Imaging Association, said, “A random check of all those centres will reveal that they have been faulted for minor clerical mistakes.
