Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is in the process of upgrading the healthcare facilities in the state, on Tuesday said she plans to set up four super–speciality hospital, one each in Midnapore (west), Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum.
According the Mamata, these four districts lack basic facilities and time has come to overhaul the healthcare infrastructure. She wants to revamp the existing infrastructure at primary healthcare centres as a short–term goal, because she is aware that making mega changes take time. Mamata has asked the health department to restructure Midnapore and Bankura medical colleges and told officials to stop the practice of referring patients to Kolkata, instead of upgrading the existing district hospitals. Mamata is trying to rope in some agencies for funds required to set up the hospitals and said the state government will provide land.
The CM also announced her plan to set up a neuroscience hospital at Rajarhat on a 20–acre plot. She wants to improve infrastructure at city hospitals and particularly is in favour of revamping orthopedic departments at Mayo Hospital and Ramrick Das Hospital, along with setting up trauma care centres there.
Mamata is also planning to increase seats in the medical colleges. For that, 300 MBBS seats have already been increased and another 400 seats are likely to be increased soon.
