The state women and child development department is considering a move to make HIV tests mandatory before marriage.

Varsha Gaikwad, minister for women and child development said her department will be consulting various sections of society in this connection. "The department had sought opinion from NGOs working for the welfare of HIV patients and the UNICEF," she added.

According to officials, the minister has plans to convene a meeting of stakeholders soon to discuss the move, which will require an amendment to the provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and other legislations. During the state assembly’s monsoon session, MNS legislator Shirish Shinde had moved a private member’s bill suggesting the necessary amendments. However, elected representatives were divided over the issue.
