Causes of Premenstrual Syndrome
The exact cause is not known, but it is supposed to be related to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. It has shown that women who have some deficiencies like zinc, magnesium, Vitamins E and B6, or certain fatty acids in their diet suffer from PMS. It also maybe due to alteration in the levels of hormones, estrogen and progesterone.
Symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome
Physical Symptoms
- Backache.
- Swollen feet and hands.
- Enlarged and tender breasts.
- Bloated abdomen.
- Weight gain.
- Pain in the joints.
- Cramps in lower abdomen.
- Skin rash and blemishes.
- Headache with nausea and vomiting.
- Diarrhea or constipation.
- Altered eating habits like craving for specific food.
- Sometimes asthma.
- Dyspareunia (Painful or difficult sexual intercourse).
- Irritability.
- Moodiness.
- Anger, depression.
- Anxiety, tension, difficulty in concentrating.
- Tiredness.
- Nervousness.
Treatment for PMS depends on the symptoms experienced. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the severity of PMS. Multivitamin or mineral supplements such as Vitamin B complex, magnesium and calcium can be taken. Other medication prescribed includes hormone treatments, anti–depressant drugs, mild tranquillizers, birth control pills, and diuretics to reduce bloating.
Changes in your lifestyle could help you reduce the symptoms of PMS:
- By eating starchy food like rice, chapattis and potatoes could help you get ride of your depression to certain extent. Eat snacks rich in carbohydrates but should not be combined with fat and protein. For example unsalted popcorn without oil or butter.
- Caffeine (a substance in coffee ) is a stimulant, should be avoided. It increase irritability and anxiety. Never stop the intake abruptly if you are addicted to coffee.
- Exercise regularly, it help reduce the symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome. Exercise helps to elevate your mood and helps you feel fresh. It also helps to increase blood circulation. Yoga is also helpful.
