Causes of Hunger (Hypoglycemic) Headaches
Hunger can give you a headache, especially if you have a tendency to hypoglycemia (low blood glucose). For most people, a skipped meal or two is not a problem, unless you have a problem with insulin production. Low blood sugar can also be the reason. Exercise is also a factor and can contribute to hypoglycemia.
Treatment of Hunger (Hypoglycemic) Headaches
For serious hypoglycemia, when blood glucose dips below about 60 milligrams per deciliter, the remedy is immediate ingestion of sugar in some form followed by a more complex carbohydrate. If your headache is simply from a missed meal, eating a meal will probably cure it.
Prevention of Hunger (Hypoglycemic) Headaches
Eat at regular times. If you take insulin or other drugs for diabetes that lower blood glucose, monitor your blood glucose levels frequently, and adjust your food and medication according to the results of your monitoring. If you experience hypoglycemic episodes overnight, eat a bedtime snack.
