Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease

The Alzheimer’s Association has developed the following list of warning signs that include common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals who exhibit several of these symptoms should consult a Physician.
  1. Memory Loss: A person with Alzheimer disease may forget things very often and not be able to remember them later, especially things that have happened more recently.
  2. Difficulty in performing familiar tasks: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may have trouble with tasks that has been familiar to them all their lives, such as preparing a meal.
  3. Problems with language: A Person with Alzheimer’s disease may forget simple words or substitute words, making sentences difficult to understand.
  4. Disorientation of time and place: A Person with Alzheimer’s disease can get lost on their own street. They may not know how they reached there, or not know how to get home.
  5. Poor or decreased judgment: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may have poor judgment, for example not able to recognize a medical problem that needs medical assistance.
  6. Problems with abstract thinking: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may have significant difficulties with task such as not recognizing what the numbers mean in cheque book.
  7. Misplacing things: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in inappropriate places such as placing wristwatch in the freezer.
  8. Changes in mood or behavior: A person with Alzheimer’s disease can exhibit varied mood swings, from happy to sad without any reason.
  9. Changes in personality: A person with Alzheimer’s disease can become confused, suspicious or withdrawn. Can also behave or act as another character.
  10. Loss of initiative: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may become very passive and not take the initiative to do anything.
Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
The first symptom of Alzheimer’s disease is generally lack of memory. The usual decline of memory in adult becomes more severe and begins to affect academic capability. Memory loss is ultimately accompanied by other symptoms, which might consist of:
  • Lack of concentration
  • Difficulty understanding both written and spoken languages
  • Wandering and getting lost,even in recognizable atmosphere
In the premature stages of the disease, people normally becomes aware that they have become more forget. This leads to depression and nervousness. After some time, the existing symptoms might get worse and other symptoms might form, including:
  • Slow actions and unevenness in walking
  • Rapid mood swings from pleasures to tearfulness
  • Personal changes, aggression, and feelings of harassment
At times people find difficulty in sleeping and become restless at night. After some years, most people with this disease are unable to look after themselves and need full–time care.
